Easy Wheat tortillas for a taco night

Store-bought tortillas have just too many excess ingredients and they always smell quite sour and unpleasant. So make them yourself!

Here is a very easy quick alternative to make tortillas at home from wheat flour that you probably always have available!

INGREDIENTS

  • 250g wheat flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp fine salt
  • 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 110 g water

PREPARING THE DOUGH

Mix the flour, baking powder and fine salt. Add the olive oil and water, and mix it with a wooden spoon, you can also use a silicone spatula.

Kneed this on a smooth surface for 5 min by hand until the dough is smooth.

Leave it aside to rest for at least 30min.

SHAPING AND COOKING

The dough is usually very smooth and not too sticky, so I usually don’t use any flour on the surface, I roll out the dough directly. Not using flour here will also help the tortillas to cook nicely, the excess flour tends to burn quickly.

Divide the dough in half and roll out a sausage shape.

Divide the sausage in 4 pieces and roll them into balls. Do the same with the rest of the dough.

Then with a rolling pin roll out the tortillas, don’t worry if the shape is not perfectly round.

Heat up a small pan, it is best if it is at a medium high heat. Put the tortilla on from one side, cook it for about a minute until the bottom is slightly brown and then turn around, cook for another minute or so.

If the heat is perfect, you will see some small air pockets forming. But if this doesn’t happen in the first time, don’t worry! It will taste great anyway!

Cook all of the tortillas, and put them in a clean hand towel too keep them hot before serving with some veggies, fish or meat, some cheese, whatever you choose to put inside.
