Places and Gastronomy in Catalonia – Olivera Coop and Can Calopa

Are you staying in Catalonia this summer or you are planning to visit in the near future? There are many beautiful places to visit to taste wine, enjoy local products and buy one of the best olive oils.

This time we will be talking about the wines of Olivera Coop, their vineyard Can Calopa that is the only one on the hilltops of Barcelona city and their exquisite olive oil.

What Olivera Coop is all about

At L’Olivera we grow grapes and olives and make wines and oils meant to express the place they come from: an origin, a land and a people who interpret it by making these products.
We are a social integration cooperative whose members are people with difficulties who participate actively in the entire process. And we are convinced that work is a vital and emotional experience.

A fantastic array of high quality products with a social project behind it, it truly is a place you want to see.

Visit the winery in the province of Lleida

Visiting the winery in the DO Costers del Segre in Vallbona de les Monges is a fantastic experience as you will be able to visit the near by vines, if you are lucky to come during harvest time, you might just be able to try your hand out too see what it actually means to pick grapes.

The winery tour is quite exiting and a bit different from most traditional wineries where white wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks. The whites are fermented in oak barrels and the reds are fermented in stainless steel tanks. This gives the white wines a very creamy mouthfeel and a sweet buttery flavour and keeps the reds very fresh, high in acidity and somewhat spicy.

The temperature is being maintained at a low thanks to pipes filled with cold water that are inserted in the barrels. This helps the wine stay fresh, not oxidise and maintain all its flavours.

The wines are organic and most varieties are the local Catalonian varieties like Macabeo, Xarello, Carinyena but some international varieties as well. You can actually see what all the wines are made of on their web page with very thorough notes about that year’s vintage describing climate, its production and extensive tasting notes which is excellent for you to understand what you would best like or what dishes to accompany it with.

One of my favourite whites of the moment. Check about more about the wine HERE

Visiting Can Calopa just 10min out of the center of Barcelona

Can Calopa is the winery just on the outskirts of the city, it takes about 10min by car to arrive, but once you’re there, you are surrounded by beautiful nature, no city rustle, just fresh air, wine and local products at the tapas bar.

There is a great place to sit and enjoy a glass or a bottle of the Olivera wines, but we strongly suggest you go there for a light lunch or aperitif, because the tapas on offer are in a big variety, everything is fresh and local, and of course, no need to mention that everything is exquisite. Try the cheese platter!

This is also the perfect place where you can order some pan con tomate – toasted bred with tomato, olive oil and some garlic if you like – but what you really need to focus on is the olive oil! The one in the bar comes in a cute small tin can and is perfect to keep on the table and to season bread, grilled vegetables and meat, it is incredible!

My favourite! I don’t need anything else but this olive oil and some home baked bread.

There is a shop with all the products available, where you can buy wine, some preserved foods and marmalades and olive oil. There are some different kinds, a more simple one for every day use, we just come the organic one and I must say it is so tasty! For cooking and for salad. And the more fancy ones that have won some awards even! Trust me, you have to try them!

Remember, the cornerstones of the Med diet are conviviality, olive oil and…. wine!

If you can’t visit this year, you can also check out their online store and order for a special tasting at home.
